Who is the Holy Spirit?
He is the third person of the trinity, through who God acts, reveals his plans, intentions, will, through which God empowers individuals and disclose his personal presence seen in the O.T and N.T.
In Psalms 51:11 – David pleaded with God not to take away the Holy Spirit from him. This does imply that the Holy Spirit is not a New Testament invention, he has been with God from the beginning. When we say trinity, we mean one God in three simultaneous manifestations.
Genesis 1:2 – The spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of God, the spirit of Christ. They have been with God from the beginning. We can see the action/presence of the Holy Spirit in Old Testament in Isaiah 63:10-11. The Hebrew word for the Holy Spirit is “Ruach” it is the same word used for wind, breath and spirit.
He Holy Spirit is the executive arm under God. God uses him to implement, enforce his will on earth.
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the trinity revealed to us. He and the father and the son are one. He is co-equal, just like the son is one with God.
The Holy Spirit is a person. He has a personality. He is not a human-person, but a spirit being. In John 14:15-17 – He is referred to as the helper, the comforter, spirit of truth, can be known, and dwells with us and in us. He is introduced with the 2nd person pronoun “He’ and not with it which is a neuter gender.
He does not speak of his own power or authority, He speaks as he hears of God, He is to guide believers in truth. He glorifies Christ. John 6:7-15.
In Luke 1:26-38 – Jesus was born by the power of the Holy Spirit. He had no human seed but the incorruptible seed of the Holy Spirit. This underscores the importance of being born again. The new creation experience Luke 1:35.
In Isaiah 61:1 we can see the impact of the Holy Spirit on Jesus that gave room for father exploits.
Empowered for Service
The word, empower, means to give permission to, power or the legal right to do something. It means to allow, let, permit, inspire, give confidence to, and give strength to, often by enabling someone to increase their control over their own life or situation.
Let’s isolate the word power. The Greek word for power ‘Dunamis’ it means dynamic force. The word dynamic, electric motors came from Dynamo, a defined force A dynamic force. By extension when you are empowered you become dynamic, active, receive permission, allowance, legal right, allowance to act on behalf of God.
According to John 1:12, the scripture tells us that as many that receive Jesus Christ, God empowers them to become the sons of God. Hence, you become the seed of God.
Acts 1:8 says you shall receive power, after the Holy Spirit has come upon you. Zechariah 4:6 every exploits you are going to carry out to make meaningful impact will only come by the power of the spirit.
The empowerment is not for show or entertainment but for service for the expansion of the kingdom; the preaching of the word.
John 16:5-15, Romans 8:26-27, Jude 1:20:
- The Holy Spirit does not exalt himself or man but exalts and reveals Jesus Christ.
The ministry of the Holy Spirit in our lives is very important. We need to commune with him that is, dine and wine with him 2 Corinthians 13:14, Ephesians 5:18. Wine here mean merriment.
The Holy Spirit makes intercession for us because we know not what we ought to pray for or about. He makes intercession for us with groaning that cannot be uttered-that is via our speaking in tongues. When we speak in tongues we speak in an unknown language unto God as the Spirit gives us utterance. Through speaking in tongues God prompts us to pray in an unknown tongue unknown to us and to pray about mysterious issues unknown to our human mind that affects us directly. He uses our prayer to settle issues unknown to us otherwise could not have been solved unless we know about it.
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Christ that works in us. Hence, He quickens our mortal bodies. Every miracle and exploits performed on earth is performed by God in the name of Jesus and via the office and person of the Holy Spirit here on earth at this present dispensation.
The Holy Spirit reveals to us the mind of God in every area of our lives. He tells and reveals to us what God wants specifically from us to do or not to do per time. When we give our lives to Christ, it is the Holy Spirit that gets us born again in our spirit and makes us new creatures. The Holy Spirit renews our spirit. He births us and transfers God’s nature, eternal life, peace, grace and love in our hearts. He transfers and implements the righteousness of God in us, thereby making us the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus simply because we believe in Christ.
Every work of Christ that will be accomplished here on earth will be actualized by the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
It is therefore important to seek to be baptized by the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. Without the Holy Spirit one is just being simply religious and the bible becomes some bunch of literature without any life in it. The Holy Spirit gives life to the scriptures and activated its potentials. The Holy Spirit helps us to build up our most Holy faith each time we pray in the spirit by speaking in tongues.
The Holy Spirit is the only person that can really empower us for service and nothing can replace him in the church or in the life of a believer. Not even persuasive eloquence of human wisdom, oratory or even motivational speaking or packaging education or academic prowess can ever translate into the power of the Holy Spirit. It takes the Holy Spirit to convict men of their sins and the persuade them to turn over to God in earnest. It takes the Holy Spirit for us to worship God in truth and in the Spirit for God is a spirit and those who will worship him must do so in truth and in the spirit.
If you have not given your life to Jesus, this is a good opportunity for you to do so. Repent of your sins believe in Jesus and confess him now as your Lord and savior. Say “Dear Lord Jesus, I believe in my heart that you came and died for my sins and was raised on the third day by God. I therefore confess with my mouth that you are my Lord and savior. Please forgive and wash me with your blood. I receive your offer of grace and receive eternal life in my spirit. Thank you Jesus for making me the righteousness of God!”
